Torturing The Data To Make Sweden Look Bad

Sweden is the one place among the rich nations that has dealt with coronavirus differently. If it turns out that Sweden got a roughly similar outcome in terms of deaths without killing the economy then that makes the political classes of all other rich nations look bad. Thus there’s a considerable temptation for varied people to make Sweden’s outcome look bad.

As here:

Sweden becomes country with highest coronavirus death rate per capita

See! See! Sweden’s doing badly!

Sweden has 6.08 deaths per million inhabitants, higher than the UK, USA and Italy

Case proven, Ferguson was correct, bit of a pity about that economy but we wuz right!

The thing is, you’ve got to really torture that data to get to that result.

However, Sweden has only had the highest death rate over the past week, with Belgium, Spain, Italy, the UK and France, still ahead over the entire course of the pandemic.

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the spokesman for Sweden’s outlier coronavirus strategy, dismissed the figures on Tuesday night, arguing that it was misleading to focus on the death toll over a single week.

Doesn’t matter, we’ve got our headline, public opinion is diverted, job done.

That this is reality doesn’t come into it, for this is about proving the ruling classes were right, whatever the pain, not about uncovering any truth that might be out there:

Lying scumbags. This being why, of course, politics is such a bad way of managing the world. For politics never will admit of error:

Politics, as opposed to science, does not reward the correction of mistakes, given that correcting a mistake also entails admitting to having made one. Worse, the bigger the mistake, the greater the political urgency of defending it at all costs.

Ain’t that the truth.

The justification of their claim to rule over us is that they know what they’re doing. If only there were some evidence of the contention.
