Apparently there are no black members of the group that runs the Golden Globes awards:
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) addressed their controversial diversity issue, namely the fact that the organization currently has no Black members, during Sunday night’s broadcast.
“The point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important,” Fey said. “And there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press. I realize HFPA, maybe you guys didn’t get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald’s. But, you’ve got to change that, so here’s to changing it.”
Cecil B. DeMille honoree Jane Fonda issued her own challenge for Hollywood to be leaders in the push for diversity.
“There’s a story we’ve been afraid to hear about ourselves in this industry. Let’s all of us, including the groups who decide who gets recognized, let’s all of us make an effort,” Fonda said. “Let’s all of us make an effort to expand that tent so that everyone rises, so everyone’s story has a chance to be heard. Let’s be leaders.”
So, the HFPA is a voluntary organisation. You apply to join. The qualifications, as well as wanting to be in, are that you be based in Southern California and also that you write about movies and TV for foreign – ie, non-US – outlets.
It tends to be foreigners too – although it doesn’t have to be. It’s just more likely that someone who carves out a career explaining Holloywood to Germans will be a German in Hollywood rather than an American trying to speak German. Etc for most other countries too.
While they don’t have to be foreign correspondents they’re more likely to be that is.
OK, so how many people are there living in Southern California who report on Hollywood for foreign media who are black? How many Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan etc etc such correspondents are there?
That is, the pool from which the HFPA volunteers are drawn from is how large? And this is the problem of the HFPA why?
Sigh, the mummers are stupid, aren’t they?
